No one ever expects a dental emergency to happen to them,\nbut 1 in 6 Americans have one every year. If you experience sudden pain, trauma\nto the face, or another issue, do you know what to do? Oral health emergencies\nare not widely discussed, so it is common to not know how to handle the\nsituation. Although you might be a bit unsure of what to do, time is of the\nutmost importance. It is best to act fast at home and call your dentist<\/a>\nright away to save your smile. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Treating Dental Emergencies<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When the unexpected happens, your first instinct might be to\nhead to your local emergency room; however, they are not equipped to handle\nthese situations. Unless you suspect your jaw is broken or you have uncontrollable\nbleeding, it is best to call your emergency dentist right away and then treat\nthe issue at home. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Knocked Out Tooth<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A tooth that has been knocked out can often be saved if you\nact quickly. Hold it by the crown and rinse it with water. Do not use any\ncleaners, scrub it, or dry it. Try to reinsert it back into the socket. If you\nare not successful, place it in a cup of milk or water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dislodged Tooth<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Gently try to push it back into position and bit on a piece\nof gauze to prevent it from moving while you wait for your appointment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Toothache<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A sudden or a gradual toothache might be a sign of an\ninfection, known as an abscess. You need immediate care to prevent the\ninfection from spreading into surrounding tissues. Use over-the-counter pain\nrelievers to manage your discomfort. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Broken Tooth<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Rinse your mouth with warm salt water and keep your tooth\nclean. Avoid placing pressure on it. If there is any swelling, apply a cold\ncompress to the outside of your face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Object Stuck in Teeth<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Carefully try to remove it with dental floss. Never use sharp\nor metal instruments to get it out. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lost Restoration<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

If a crown or filling comes loose, do not try to fix it on\nyour own. Instead, keep your tooth clean and use home remedies to manage any\npain. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Broken Oral Appliance<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

If possible, remove the oral appliance and evaluate the\nextent of the damage. Put it in a safe place until after it has been repaired.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n
