You can almost tell when something is seriously wrong\u2014the tooth pain you experience may be severe and unrelenting. If this is the case, then Dr. Patel will want to see you as soon as possible to assess the situation. Sometimes, severe pain means that you have an infected tooth and need root canal therapy to remove the infection and preserve the tooth.<\/p>\n<h2>Cracked or Chipped Tooth<\/h2>\n<p>A chipped tooth might not be an emergency. Dr. Patel can usually fix a chip with composite bonding or by simply smoothing the tooth. A cracked or fractured tooth may mean that there is internal injury to the tooth. In the meantime, you can rinse your mouth with warm water, take acetaminophen if there is pain and use a cold compress to reduce any swelling.<\/p>\n<h2>Missing Crown or Lost Filling<\/h2>\n<p>If you have a missing crown or a lost filling, then the tooth is no longer protected by these restorations. The tooth may be sensitive to temperature, pressure or air.
